Ten Years of Outstanding Children’s Films Curated by Monica Wahi
“To mark DIFF’s 10th anniversary, we decided to re-program some of the most memorable films that I have presented in the last decade.
In keeping with the temperature of the times, the selection explores what it means to be young and mutinous. From joyous everyday rebellions, to painful crossing overs, to fearless collective resistance, the young in these narratives seek to make meaning of their existence. Freedom, agency, belonging - desires that drive these stories - interrogate broader questions of power and truth. The romance of youth springs as much from its tender hunger to love as its ability to wilfully challenge what is “given”.
The productions like the protagonists they feature are defiant independent works, most made by first time filmmakers, on the margins of the mega entertainment industry. Hope the selection provokes, moves, thrills, infects audiences with possibilities of constructing new realities.”
