At the age of 63, as he nears retirement age, Joaquim is forced to adhere to job centre rules to qualify for unemployment benefits. Despite knowing he will never return to work, he is forced to go from company to company, asking for stamps to prove he is looking for employment. In the midst of these travails, Joaquim reminisces about his life as a Portuguese immigrant to the US, where, over a lifetime, he has worked as a cab driver in New York and witnessed numerous Wall Street crashes. In the course of a non-linear road movie narrative, Jack’s Ride draws concentric circles around its protagonist’s past.
