Māori ancestors were great canoe or “waka” builders, navigators and sailors. Loimata, The Sweetest Tears, directed by Anna Marbrook, follows Ema Siope, a legendary waka sailor, who travels to her homeland in Samoa, the first time for her family members since 1959, confronting intergenerational trauma and the ghosts of colonization in this spiritual, jawdropping adventure across the ocean.

Loimata contains scenes that some viewers may find disturbing including conversations that concern sexual and physical abuse. National Domestic Abuse Helplines and Resources for India
