THE DISSIDENT (2020)

Premiering at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, this docu-thriller on the international coverup behind the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Directed by Oscar winner Bryan Fogel, it captures the dangers of speaking truth to power.

However, if there’s one thing Khashoggi showed us, it’s that individuals can be a formidable force for the powers that be. The Dissident takes a deep-dive into the world of Khashoggi, much beyond his identity as a Washington Post journalist, the credentials he was most famously known for. This tale of the lengths one man was willing to go to fight for democracy is perhaps one of the most important stories of our time.

Shocking to its very core, the narrative spans the chilling effects of cyber-surveillance, corruption, and eroding moral authority. But, there’s hope too, and the documentary intends to produce an informed citizenry can push their leaders to prioritise human rights.
