THE LAST SHELTER
The House of Migrants is a refuge at the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, in Gao, Mali. The shelter welcomes both those in transit to Algeria and those returning from failed attempts to reach Europe. When teenagers Esther and Kady arrive, they form a friendship with Natacha—a woman in her forties whose memory has faded over the years, along with her hopes of ever returning home. The trio form a semblance of family, and share moments of joy, hope and tenderness. But Esther and Kady—who hail from Burkina Faso—can’t relinquish their dreams of a future abroad, even when confronted with sobering tales of failure and trauma in foreign lands. The refuge itself, meanwhile, is a fragile fortress—barely able to resist the distant murmuring of the desert, replete with whispered stories of dreams and nightmares.
