Film writer and critic Namrata Joshi engages with Dibakar Banerjee, one of India’s most exciting directors, in an in-depth conversation that looks at his distinctive filmmaking trajectory and his constant search to reinvent himself cinematically.

DIBAKAR BANERJEE is an independent film director interested in power, gender and the majority minority construct. His films include: Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006), Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008), both of which won national film awards. He has also directed Love Sex Aur Dhokha (2010), followed by the political drama Shanghai (2012) and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015). Banerjee also contributed in writing and directing Netflix originals Lust Stories (2018) and Ghost Stories (2020).

NAMRATA JOSHI is an independent journalist and film critic. Currently writing for The Wire and Newsclick, her earlier stints have been at The Hindu Mumbai and Outlook Newsmagazine. In 2019 she published her first book, Reel India: Cinema Off the Beaten Track, in which she journeyed through the interiors of the country, intimately chronicling little-known accounts about the nation’s incessant obsession with the movies. Namrata is a member of FIPRESCI, the international federation of film critics based in Munich and has been on the selection committee and on the juries of numerous Indian and international film festivals.
